{"id":8108,"date":"2016-11-17t11:25:32","date_gmt":"2016-11-17t19:25:32","guid":{"rendered":"\/\/www.catharsisit.com\/hs\/?p=8108"},"modified":"2017-02-24t10:34:56","modified_gmt":"2017-02-24t18:34:56","slug":"act-english-language-learner-accommodations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"\/\/www.catharsisit.com\/hs\/act\/act-english-language-learner-accommodations\/","title":{"rendered":"act to offer accommodations for english language learners starting in 2017!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>excellent news for ell (english language learner) students taking the act. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kansas.com\/news\/local\/education\/article114672278.html\" target=\"_blank\">starting fall 2017, ell students will be able to request special supports during the act<\/a>. this is a first&mdash;not just for act, but also for the entire field of high-stakes standardized testing.<\/p>\n<p>in this post, we&#8217;ll discuss the support some ell students will receive starting fall 2017, how the qualification process works, and the reasoning behind act\u2019s big decision. so if you\u2019re ready, let\u2019s get started!<\/p>\n<h2>supports for ell students<\/h2>\n<p>importantly, ell students will take the <strong>exact same<\/strong> act as everyone else in 2017-2018. the support offered is meant to assist ell students, not create an easier test. below are some examples of the supports eligible ell students will receive:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a bilingual glossary<\/li>\n<li>instructions in students\u2019 native languages<\/li>\n<li>testing in a separate room (with a small group or by yourself)<\/li>\n<li>additional time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>more big news! <\/strong>the first two supports will be available in many languages. this way, ell students from all over the world can take advantage of them.<\/p>\n<h2>who is eligible for supports?<\/h2>\n<p>just because a student\u2019s first language isn\u2019t english doesn\u2019t mean that he or she automatically qualifies for supports. high schools will evaluate which ell students would benefit the most <strong>on a case-by-case basis<\/strong>. even if a student is found eligible, he or she may not qualify for all the supports.<\/p>\n<h2>are supports fair to other test takers?<\/h2>\n<p>for test-takers whose first language is english, the first reaction to this news may be to feel that the situation is a bit unfair. after all, who wouldn\u2019t want some extra time to take the act? but keep in mind what the act is designed to measure: your potential as a college student.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8109\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8109\" style=\"width: 387px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8109\" src=\"\/\/www.catharsisit.com\/hs\/files\/2016\/11\/large.gif\" alt=\"attention ell students taking the act in 2017-2018!
