exam. so just what are these nine essential skills you\u2019re expected to master and demonstrate? read on to find out more. <\/p>\n<h2>1. analyzing evidence: content and sourcing <\/h2>\n<p>the first of the nine apush historical thinking skills deals with how well you can analyze primary sources. to demonstrate this skill, you should be able to examine a primary source and identify: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the author\u2019s purpose and point of view <\/li>\n<li>the intended audience <\/li>\n<li>the historical context<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>2. interpretation <\/h2>\n<p>this skill deals with analyzing secondary sources \u2014 those in which a historian is interpreting the past. to demonstrate this skill, you should be able to examine a secondary source and describe: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the author\u2019s argument <\/li>\n<li>how well the author supports the argument with evidence <\/li>\n<li>how it relates to other historical interpretations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>3. comparison <\/h2>\n<p>this skill deals with making historical connections by comparing and contrasting events, societies, or perspectives. to demonstrate this skill, you should be able to: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>compare the points of view found in multiple primary and\/or secondary sources <\/li>\n<li>find the similarities and differences between events, people, societies, and processes throughout history <\/li>\n<li>\nmake comparisons across different time periods and geographic areas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>4. contextualization <\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/www.catharsisit.com\/hs\/ap\/contextualization-apush-skills\/\">contextualization<\/a> involves the ability to put something in its proper historical context\u2014understanding an event or <\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>6. causation <\/h2>\n<p>causation is a chronological reasoning skill. it involves understanding cause-and-effect relationships throughout history. to demonstrate this skill, you should be able to: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>identify long- and short-term causes of historical events <\/li>\n<li>evaluate the relative significance of multiple causes of a historical event<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>7. patterns of continuity and change over time <\/h2>\n<p>this skill asks you to look for patterns in the way that events unfold across time and place. to demonstrate this
