here’s a great guest post from our friends over at welcome to college:
fall is a busy time of year for both students and those who work in college admissions. as students figure out their classes for the semester, admissions folks are launching into their fall travel. this means that admissions counselors from colleges and universities all over the country are starting to head out on the road to visit high schools as well as attend college fairs. here are some reasons to go meet with an admissions counselor in your school or attend a college fair:
undecided?
there are a lot of schools out there and a lot of areas of study. it is not unusual for students to be undecided in what they want to study or where they want to go and a college fair is a great place to learn about different institutions. if there is a school you are interested in, definitely stop by, but keep an open mind and you might find a hidden gem you didn’t know about. this goes for visits at your high school guidance office too. even if you have never heard of a school, look it up because you never know!
location, location, location!
visiting a school is always a great option, but sometimes it just isn’t possible to get to campus. a college fair brings in colleges from all over, which means that a school that might be far away could still be represented by an admissions counselor or alumni. if it is at your school, even better!
become more than just a name.
admissions counselors read a lot of applications, so introducing yourself at a college fair or at an information session at your guidance office can help you to stand out. many colleges and universities assign counselors geographic areas, so chances are the person you meet will be looking at your application later.
to visit or not to visit?
in some cases you might have information about a school but are unsure if you want to visit. meeting a counselor can be a great start in getting a feel for the school. they will also have information for you about campus visits and visit days such as open houses so you can decide what type of visit works best for you!
to sum it all up, take advantage of the college fairs and visits to high schools this fall! admissions counselors are traveling to see and meet prospective students and this is a great way to learn about schools before you get to campus. swing by and check in with your guidance counselor to see what college and universities will be visiting your school and what college fairs will be happening nearby.
