hi rob,

average rate of change is one of the fundamental ideas in calculus. it measures how quickly or slowly some quantity is changing. for example, if you are pouring water into a bucket, you might pour the water very quickly or very slowly. but over the time it take to fill the bucket, there will be an average speed at which the bucket is being filled. that would be the average rate of change of the amount of water in the bucket.
