dear future magoosher,

our mission is simple: to create products that give students everywhere access to enjoyable, affordable, and effective test prep. we especially want to support those who lack access or have been systematically disadvantaged.

we believe that in order to achieve our mission, we need a team that’s representative of the very students we serve. we are firmly committed to hiring and growing a diverse team, supporting them to do their best work, and empowering them to grow both personally and professionally. we have specific, measurable diversity goals; we instituted a number of practices over the years, including strict, non-negotiable salaries by role, level, and location to foster pay equity; and we’ve created funded employee resource groups (ergs) to help traditionally under-represented employees build community and advocate for change. but we still have work to do: not all our teams are diverse and not all employees feel equally like they belong. you can follow along on our journey here

i also realize that applying to jobs can be intimidating and stressful. if you’re excited about our mission and think you hit some but not all of the qualifications for one of our open jobs, we still encourage you to apply. we especially want to encourage individuals from under-represented groups to apply.

we care not only about the skills you have today but also the skills you’ll develop tomorrow.

values

we try our best to live our values every day, and use them as guideposts for how we make decisions. our values are set up as inequalities between two good things: the left side represents the magoosh way, and the right side represents another good way, just not our way. knowing what you aren't is as important as knowing what you are.

wow > profit

wow > profit

  • we wow customers and each other with service even at the expense of short-term profit.
  • we go above and beyond in our work and never say, “it’s not my job.”

accessible > exclusive

accessible > exclusive

  • we are available to help and support our students and teammates.
  • we encourage ideas from everyone—the best ideas can come from anywhere!

friendly > formal

friendly > formal

  • we respond to and talk about colleagues, customers, and partners in a friendly and positive tone.
  • we take responsibility for our mistakes and don’t harp on the mistakes of others.
  • we trust each other and don’t engage in politicking.

learning > knowing

learning > knowing

  • we independently seek out learning opportunities.
  • we have a growth mindset and believe that weaknesses can be turned into strengths.
  • we believe in potential and give magooshers opportunities to grow and change roles.

passion > [something]

passion > [something]

  • we love what we do–helping students is too much fun to be considered work.
  • we enjoy thinking about magoosh and our students whether at work or home.
  • we help our teammates and students in times of need, even if we have to leave a dinner party to do it.

change > status quo

change > status quo

  • we will always be a work in progress.
  • we adapt to difficult and unplanned situations with a positive attitude.
  • we constantly re-evaluate our priorities.

challenge > comfort

challenge > comfort

  • we tackle tasks that we’ve never done before.
  • we understand the best progress often comes from uncomfortable situations.
  • we challenge ourselves to learn new skills—we are always students.

done > perfect

done > perfect

  • we have a bias toward action. we don’t delay for perfect tomorrow what can be done well today.
  • we believe in the pareto principle. we try to achieve 80% of the impact with 20% of the effort.

data > intuition

data > intuition

  • we run experiments to test ideas and gather data. we’re scientists!
  • we collect feedback often since we don’t read minds…well 🙂
  • we confirm (or disprove!) our intuitions with data.

communication > efficiency

communication > efficiency

  • we set clear expectations and don’t oversell to students, partners, and teammates.
  • we let people know when we’ve completed a task, closing the “communication loop.”
  • we follow up and send reminders–we don’t pass the buck.
  • we value direct, person-to-person feedback and communication.

this is a place where it’s not just that we say, “oh, you’ll have work / life balance,” but people are genuinely interested in what you do outside of the office and how they can support you and learn about you as a whole person.

hiring process

like school applications, job applications can be stressful and time-intensive. at magoosh, we believe in pulling back the curtain and supporting you through each step of our process. from transparent job descriptions, to resources at each stage, our goal is to alleviate as much of that stress as we can.

our full-time process is below, but many of our part-time and contractor roles follow a similar process.

1. application

we’re excited to learn more about you! our application will ask for a resume, cover letter, and answers to role-specific questions. don’t have all of the listed requirements? we encourage you to apply anyway! we normally get back to candidates within two weeks.

2. phone interview

during this interview, we’ll learn more about your skills for the role as well as what you could add to our culture here at magoosh. phone interviews can last anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes.

3. assessment

the assessment stage is anonymized, which means the hiring manager won’t know whose assessment they’re grading—your work will have the opportunity to speak for itself! this is also a great opportunity for you to get a glimpse of the work itself and whether it aligns with your expectations and goals. depending on the role, the assessment could take anywhere between one to three hours.

4. final interview

our final interview normally consists of 1-2 skills-based interviews, 1 culture interview, and 1 reverse interview. the reverse interview is an opportunity for you to interview us! the reverse interviewer is normally someone who has insight into the team you'll be joining, so we encourage candidates to ask their questions candidly (e.g., what's the culture really like?). mutual selection is super important to us, so we want to make sure you have all of the information you need. our final interview day can last anywhere between 3-5 hours.

5. offer

if we’re interested in making an offer, we’ll ask to speak to 2-3 references. and once we make an offer, we’ll send over a background check to ensure we dot our i’s and cross our t’s. our first offer is our best offer, nothing held back. :)
