core values"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>this post was originally published by me in august 2013. because we revisit and update our\u00a0list of core values often, we thought it was time to bump this list to the top of our blog list in order keep you in the loop. we never want you to have to question\u00a0where magoosh stands. enjoy!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>at magoosh, our culture and values define how we approach our work, interact with students and each other, and much more. contrary to popular belief, culture isn&#8217;t about whether or not you drink blue bottle coffee, are good at foosball, or like certain movies. a good set of values is a decision-making framework\u2014values should help team members make decisions between two good options.<\/p>\n<p>in true nerd fashion, we&#8217;ve turned our values into inequalities\u2014we are test prep experts after all! the left side represents the magoosh way, and the right side represents another good way, just not our way. <strong>knowing what you aren&#8217;t is as important as knowing what you are.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>done &gt; perfect<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>we have a bias toward action. we don\u2019t delay for perfect tomorrow what can be done well today.<\/li>\n<li>we believe in the pareto principle. we try to achieve 80% of the impact with 20% of the effort.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>data &gt; intuition<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>we run experiments to test ideas and gather data. we\u2019re scientists!<\/li>\n<li>we collect feedback often since we don\u2019t read minds&#8230;well \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<li>we confirm (or disprove!) our intuitions with data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>passion &gt; [something]<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>we love what we do\u2013helping students is too much fun to be considered work.<\/li>\n<li>we enjoy thinking about magoosh and our students whether at work or home.<\/li>\n<li>we help our teammates and students in times of need, even if we have to leave a dinner party to do it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>challenge &gt; comfort<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>we tackle tasks that we\u2019ve never done before.<\/li>\n<li>we understand the best progress often comes from uncomfortable situations.<\/li>\n<li>we challenge ourselves to learn new skills\u2014we are always students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>communication &gt; efficiency<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>we set clear expectations and don\u2019t oversell to students, partners, and teammates.<\/li>\n<li>we let people know when we\u2019ve completed a task, closing the \u201ccommunication loop.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>we follow up and send reminders\u2013we don\u2019t pass the buck.<\/li>\n<li>we value direct, person-to-person feedback and communication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>friendly &gt; formal<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>we respond to and talk about colleagues, customers, and partners in a friendly and positive tone.<\/li>\n<li>we take responsibility for our mistakes and don\u2019t harp on the mistakes of others.<\/li>\n<li>we trust each other and don\u2019t engage in politicking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>change &gt; status quo<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>we will always be a work in progress.<\/li>\n<li>we adapt to difficult and unplanned situations with a positive attitude.<\/li>\n<li>we constantly re-evaluate our priorities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>learning &gt; knowing<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>we independently seek out learning opportunities<\/li>\n<li>we have a growth mindset and believe that weaknesses can be turned into strengths<\/li>\n<li>we believe in potential and give magooshers opportunities to grow and change roles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>accessible &gt; exclusive<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>we are available to help and support our students and teammates.<\/li>\n<li>we encourage ideas from everyone\u2014the best ideas can come from anywhere!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>wow &gt; profit<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>we wow customers and each other with service even at the expense of short-term profit.<\/li>\n<li>we go above and beyond in our work and never say, \u201cit\u2019s not my job.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>we readily share and give credit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/www.catharsisit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/magoosh-values-signs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1391\" 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/a>_______<\/p>\n<p>by no means is this our last and final list. it&#8217;s <em>done<\/em> but not <em>perfect<\/em>, and we know there&#8217;s room for\u00a0<em>change<\/em>. however, these values help us collectively make hundreds of decisions every day. we not only trust each other to follow them, but we also hold each other accountable when we don&#8217;t. i&#8217;ve even been able to adopt some of our values in my personal life\u2014i now make faster decisions (though still slower than many on the magoosh team&#8230;still working on that), and i&#8217;ve learned to embrace change and unplanned situations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>learn about magoosh culture and how it informs
